Koro Island’s Call: Keep Kids Safe by Choosing Local Schools

The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents on Koro Island to enroll their children in Koro High School instead of urban schools, citing social issues affecting Viti Levu. He made this appeal during a community discussion in Nasau Village, Mudu, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children.

“We must protect our children at all times on our island. I encourage you to send your children to Koro High School when they reach Year 13,” Mr. Turaga stated. He expressed concerns about the dangers in urban areas and urged parents to consider the potential risks their children might face there.

Mr. Turaga announced that new programs would be introduced at Koro High School, including TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) initiatives. He also noted that the government has decided to provide a salary for the school chaplain, highlighting the role of education in Fiji, which was first introduced by missionaries.

“When chaplains are missing from schools, we notice a shift in generation. We have much work ahead,” he remarked, emphasizing the significance of this gathering to listen and communicate effectively.

In addition, Vonevate Vetaukula, the Tui Nasau of Nasau Village, mentioned that the village is planning to purchase internet data from Starlink Services to aid its students. Currently, Koro High School has approximately 300 students enrolled.
