The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has announced an exciting initiative to build an international-standard sports facility on Koro Island. This project represents a key step forward in enhancing sports infrastructure for rural and maritime communities in Fiji.
Gilbert Vakalalabure, the executive chairman of the FSC, explained that Koro Island was selected due to its potential to promote inclusivity and accessibility in sports development. “We are committed to ensuring that sports development transcends geographical barriers,” he stated, highlighting the vision behind the project.
The planned facility will include a fully equipped playing field, modern changing rooms, and amenities that meet global standards. It is designed to host local and regional events, with aspirations to attract major tournaments in the future. Vakalalabure noted that the initiative is about more than sports; it’s also about creating opportunities, enhancing tourism, and inspiring future generations.
The council expressed gratitude to the mataqali Sebu of the yavusa Nabucabuca for their generous offer of land for this initiative. Despite anticipated challenges related to Koro’s road infrastructure and logistical needs, Vakalalabure assured that the council is dedicated to collaborating with local authorities to address these issues.
Construction is slated to begin in early 2025, with substantial progress expected within two years. This project symbolizes optimism and development, proving that even remote communities can achieve significant advancements and opportunities.
This initiative not only promises to uplift the local community through sports but also serves as a catalyst for economic growth and community engagement. It’s a hopeful reminder that with determination and collaboration, meaningful change is possible for all communities.
