Korea Pledges to Support Fiji’s Development Efforts
The Republic of Korea has committed to furthering Fiji’s development endeavours through a significant $10 million financial boost. This substantial assistance package was announced during a four-day gathering of government heads in Seoul aimed at forging stronger relationships with Pacific Island nations.
Strengthening Pacific Ties
The opportunity for improved relations with Korea and the Pacific region arose during the Korea-Pacific Islands Senior Officials Meeting. Representatives from fifteen Pacific Island nations participated in the four-day event which concluded on November 30, 2021.
Among the attendees were guests from Fiji, led by Head of Development Cooperation Division and Head of International Cooperation Bureau, Mr. Choi Jae Sung. The meeting served as an effective platform for discussing various ways to strengthen cooperation with the Republic of Korea and the scope of assistance to Pacific Island countries.
Dedicated Investment in Fiji’s Future
The financial support from Korea is expected to fortify Fiji’s development programs over the next five years. This investment will be directed towards various projects in Fiji, furthering its efforts in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The assistance provided by Korea is geared towards bolstering efforts in sectors including education, environment conservation, and health. Additionally, support will be given to enhance Fiji’s digital infrastructure and help bridge the digital divide in the country.
