Fiji Airways men’s rugby sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has expressed a strong desire to dedicate more time to his family this year. At 39 years old and hailing from Namuka-i-Lau, Kolinisau has spent significant time away from his family, who reside in the U.S. His wife, Mere Tavu Fa, and their children visit regularly, but he is eager to enhance their time together.
Kolinisau stated, “I just want more family time, win the HSBC SVNS series, and strive to be a better person than I was last year.” This reflects not just a personal ambition but also a commitment to improve as both a person and a coach. The 2016 Olympic gold medalist has identified areas for personal growth and aims to further refine his coaching methods.
Under Kolinisau’s guidance, the Fiji men’s team has enjoyed impressive accomplishments, including a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games shortly after his appointment, along with their first Cup title win in Dubai last month, ending a 25-tournament winless streak.
Looking forward, Kolinisau plans to maintain the team’s strong performance as they currently lead the HSBC SVNS series with 36 points, four ahead of Spain. He also aspires to enhance his coaching skills by learning from other coaches.
Next week, Kolinisau will serve as an ambassador for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, where he will announce the national squad for this three-day event. The selection for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament, taking place January 24-26, will follow.
Kolinisau’s focus on family alongside his professional responsibilities sets an inspiring example for many, illustrating that one can strive for success in sport while nurturing personal connections. As he aims for both personal and professional growth this year, there is a sense of optimism surrounding his journey with the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team.
In summary, Kolinisau is positioned for a transformative year, balancing family priorities with his coaching aspirations, demonstrating that the pursuit of excellence in sports can harmoniously coexist with personal fulfillment and family bonds.
