Osea Kolinisau, the coach who led the Fiji men’s rugby team to an Olympic silver medal, will report to the Fiji Rugby Union’s interim Trustees today. This meeting was confirmed by FRU interim chairman Peter Mazey, who shared that Kolinisau’s review will take place on Thursday.
Kolinisau has expressed his desire to guide the squad to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He took over the team four months ahead of the Paris Olympics, where Fiji secured silver, adding to the gold medals won in Rio and Tokyo, with France claiming gold at the Stade de France.
In a previous statement to SunSPORTS, Kolinisau expressed his commitment to Fiji, stating, “My heart has always been for Fiji and I love the opportunity to build that team for the next four years.” He highlighted the presence of many young players on the team and emphasized his wish to continue in his role, though he acknowledged that the decision ultimately lies with the FRU.
Kolinisau expressed pride in the current team’s core, particularly focusing on players aged 24 to 26. He remarked, “We know the standard that we are supposed to be playing in. We have a base that we can build on if we are given the opportunity.”
When asked if Kolinisau would be considered for a continued role, Mazey affirmed, “Yes, of course.” He explained that all contracts at Fiji Rugby are subject to renewal policies, which generally require advertising, though he could not confirm if Kolinisau’s position would be included in this process. Still, Mazey praised Kolinisau’s accomplishments, noting the significant progress made in just four months, culminating in an Olympic silver medal after previously not achieving any podium finishes in 22 tournaments.
