Kolinisau’s Next Move: Will Fiji Rugby Shine at LA 2028?

Olympic silver medal-winning coach Osea Kolinisau is set to meet with the interim Trustees of the Fiji Rugby Union today to present his post-Paris report. This meeting was confirmed by FRU interim chairman Peter Mazey, who noted that Kolinisau’s review will take place on Thursday.

Kolinisau has expressed interest in leading the squad to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He took charge of the Fiji team just four months before the recent Olympic Games, where they secured a silver medal, adding to the golds won in Rio and Tokyo, with France claiming gold at the Stade de France.

In earlier comments, Kolinisau shared his dedication to Fiji, stating, “My heart has always been for Fiji and I love the opportunity to build that team for the next four years.” He highlighted the potential within the current squad, noting the presence of many young players.

Kolinisau indicated his desire to remain in his role, although the final decision lies with the FRU. He expressed pride in the current team’s core, particularly those aged between 24 and 26. “We know the standard that we are supposed to be playing in. We have a base that we can build on if we are given the opportunity,” he remarked.

When asked if Kolinisau would be considered for the position moving forward, Mazey affirmed, “Yes, of course.” He clarified that while the policy for renewing contracts at Fiji Rugby requires advertising them, it remains uncertain if this will apply in Kolinisau’s case. Mazey praised Kolinisau’s accomplishments, noting his remarkable achievement of transforming the team from not securing any medals in 22 tournaments to earning silver at the Olympics in just four months.
