Kolinisau’s Next Move: Aiming for Gold in 2028?

Osea Kolinisau, the coach who led the Fiji rugby team to an Olympic silver medal, is scheduled to meet with the interim trustees of the Fiji Rugby Union today to present his report following the Paris Olympics. This was confirmed by FRU interim chairman Peter Mazey, who noted that the review would take place on Thursday.

Kolinisau has expressed a desire to lead the team towards the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He took over as coach just four months prior to the Paris Olympics, during which Fiji secured a silver medal, adding to their previous gold medals from Rio and Tokyo, with France winning the gold at the Stade de France.

In an interview, Kolinisau emphasized his commitment to Fiji and his enthusiasm for developing the team over the next four years. He highlighted the presence of many young players in the current squad and expressed his wish to continue in his role, although he acknowledged that the final decision rests with the Fiji Rugby Union.

Kolinisau is proud of the team’s current core, particularly those in the 24 to 26 age range, and believes they have a strong foundation to build upon. When asked by Mazey whether Kolinisau would be considered for the coaching position moving forward, he affirmed that he would definitely be a candidate. Mazey praised Kolinisau’s impressive achievement of transforming the team in such a short time, stating that securing an Olympic silver medal from 22 tournaments without any prior achievements is remarkable.
