Fiji Airways men’s rugby sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has expressed his intention to focus more on family time this year. At 39 years old and hailing from Namuka-i-Lau, Kolinisau has spent considerable time away from his family, who reside in the U.S. Since he took on the coaching role in March of last year, his wife Mere Tavu Fa and their children have visited Fiji regularly, but Kolinisau is eager to prioritize his family life.
“I just want more family time, win the HSBC SVNS series, and just to be a better person than I was last year,” he stated. The 2016 Olympic gold medalist is reflecting on both personal and professional growth. He recognizes areas where he can improve as an individual and intends to enhance his coaching methods as well.
Under Kolinisau’s guidance, the Fiji men’s team achieved significant milestones, including a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games shortly after he assumed the coaching role. Last month, he also led his team to their first Cup title win in Dubai, ending a 25-tournament winless streak. Looking ahead, Kolinisau is keen to maintain this momentum and consistency in performance.
As an ambassador for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, Kolinisau will be naming the national team for this three-day event. Following this, a squad will be selected for the Perth 7s tournament scheduled for January 24-26. The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team currently leads the HSBC SVNS series, holding 36 points, with Spain and France trailing behind.
