Fiji Airways men’s rugby sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has expressed a heartfelt desire to prioritize family time in 2025. The 39-year-old, from Namuka-i-Lau, has found himself away from his loved ones, who live in the U.S., since he took over the coaching role in March last year. His wife, Mere Tavu Fa, and their children frequently visit Fiji, but Kolinisau aims to enhance the time they spend together.
He reflected on his aspirations, stating, “I just want more family time, win the HSBC SVNS series, and strive to be a better person than I was last year.” As a 2016 Olympic gold medalist, he recognizes the importance of both personal growth and effective coaching, and is determined to improve himself in these areas.
Under Kolinisau’s guidance, the Fiji men’s sevens team has achieved notable success, including a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games shortly after his ascension to the coaching role. Additionally, the team broke a 25-tournament winless drought by winning their first Cup title in Dubai last month. Looking ahead, he aims to maintain this level of performance; the team currently leads the HSBC SVNS series with 36 points, ahead of Spain and France.
Kolinisau is set to serve as the ambassador for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, where he will also announce the national team for this event. Following this, he will finalize selections for the Perth 7s tournament scheduled for January 24-26.
His commitment to balancing family life along with his professional responsibilities serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of nurturing both personal relationships and athletic achievements. This year promises to be transformative for Kolinisau, emphasizing the harmony that can exist between defining success in sports and maintaining strong family bonds. His dual focus on family and coaching not only sets a positive example for athletes but also reflects the potential for growth in both personal and professional realms.
