Fiji Airways men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has issued a clear message regarding team selection, urging players to earn their places through performance and determination. Kolinisau emphasized that he will not tolerate complacency among established players, making it clear that long tenures with the team do not guarantee selection.
“I wanted everybody to compete. I don’t want complacency in the squad, where people that are in the squad for a long time think ‘I’ll always get picked,’” Kolinisau stated during a media briefing at Albert Park in Suva. His comments come as new players join the extended squad, fostering a competitive atmosphere where every position is contested.
The team’s training sessions have reflected this focus, with several players vying for spots in the lineup for the upcoming Singapore 7s and other events in the HSBC SVNS Series later this year. As of Sunday, the squad has returned to camp for a week of intensive training in preparation for the challenges ahead.
Kolinisau’s decision to cultivate competition is aimed at strengthening the squad, as he looks to identify the best talent for the international stage. The national squad will be announced following the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s, which is set to take place next week. This strategic approach signals a bright future for Fiji’s 7s team, as a healthy competitive environment is essential for elevating team performance on the world stage.
