Fiji Airways men’s rugby sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau is focusing on enhancing his family life this year while continuing to pursue success for the team. The 39-year-old coach, who hails from Namuka-i-Lau, has spent a significant amount of time away from his family, who reside in the United States, since he took over the coaching role in March of last year. Though his wife, Mere Tavu Fa, and their children make regular trips to Fiji, Kolinisau is eager to create more opportunities for family bonding.

“I just want more family time, win the HSBC SVNS series, and strive to be a better person than I was last year,” expressed Kolinisau, who is also reflective of his own growth as both a coach and an individual. His experience as a 2016 Olympic gold medalist has given him insight into the necessity of balancing personal and professional demands, and he recognizes areas where he can improve.

Under Kolinisau’s leadership, the Fiji men’s rugby team achieved a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games shortly after he assumed his coaching duties. Recently, he guided the team to its first Cup title win in Dubai after 25 consecutive tournaments without a victory, marking a significant achievement for Fiji rugby.

In light of the successes and improvements he hopes to maintain, Kolinisau plans to learn from other coaches to refine his strategies further. This year also sees him advocating for the sport as the ambassador for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, where he will announce the national squad for the three-day event. Team selections for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament, scheduled for January 24-26, will also follow.

Currently, the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team leads the HSBC SVNS series, holding 36 points, with Spain trailing just four points behind.

Kolinisau’s commitment to balancing family life and professional coaching is not only commendable but also serves as an inspiring example for athletes everywhere. His dual focus on personal values alongside professional achievements reflects the possibility of thriving in both areas. As the year unfolds, there is optimism that Kolinisau can successfully navigate this path, leading to continued success for both his family and the team.

In summary, this year stands to be transformative for Kolinisau, emphasizing the importance of family alongside his dedication to achieving success in rugby.
