The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Fiji Team 2 has successfully wrapped up its healthy eating education initiative, which took place from August to December 2025 at the Korotogo Andhra Sangam Primary School in Sigatoka. This program aimed at promoting health and sustainability among students and the wider community, tackling significant public health concerns affecting Fijian youth.
Ra Hanna, the team leader for KOICA Fiji Team 2, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to empower students to adopt and reinforce healthy habits in both their schools and homes. She highlighted the joy and pride seen in the students during the farm-to-table activities, noting how the commitment from parents to apply the practical skills learned will have lasting benefits. Hanna’s hope is that the seeds planted through these activities will result in sustainable health practices within the Sigatoka community.
The team crafted tailored lesson plans and guidebooks to ensure that teachers can continue the educational programs autonomously after their departure, creating a pathway for ongoing impact. These resources are designed to motivate the school community to actively engage with health and environmental challenges, ultimately fostering a sustainable and healthy lifestyle for students in the area.
The initiative featured various engaging activities, including growing vegetables in the school garden, making pots from recycled materials, and understanding food groups through creative puppet shows. The collaborative effort involved local agriculture expert Greg Cornwall to enhance the school garden, ensuring that students would have hands-on experience in cultivating and maintaining their own food source.
Overall, the program not only educated the students but also fostered community involvement, setting a foundation for a healthier future for the next generation in Sigatoka. Through these efforts, KOICA Fiji Team 2 has contributed significantly to building a brighter tomorrow for young Fijians.
