Defending champions New Zealand are inching closer to securing a semifinal spot in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship following a decisive 5-0 victory over Tahiti in Suva.
The New Zealand squad showcased their dominance from the outset, although Tahiti initially challenged them with a solid defensive strategy. The breakthrough for New Zealand occurred in the 25th minute when Pia Vlok took advantage of a defensive mistake to score the opening goal.
Things took a worrying turn for New Zealand as midfielder Keira Tichbon suffered a non-contact injury and had to leave the field. Her substitute, Grace Duncan, who had previously been named Player of the Match, brought fresh energy to the team’s attack.
As the first half drew to a close, Holly Robins extended New Zealand’s lead by capitalizing on a poorly cleared corner kick. Shortly after, Duncan struck again with a beautifully taken free-kick that went past Tahitian goalkeeper Kalea Torohia.
In the second half, though Torohia made several impressive saves, New Zealand maintained relentless attacking pressure. Goals from Natalie Young and Kya Solomon further increased the scoreline, with Solomon netting the fifth goal from a challenging angle.
With this victory, New Zealand sits atop Group B with two wins and aims to keep their undefeated streak intact in the upcoming match against the Solomon Islands.
