The Ministry of Housing in Fiji and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZ MFAT) have initiated a collaboration aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions for low-income earners by enhancing access to affordable and high-quality housing in Fiji.

Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, announced that the New Zealand government will invest over NZ$15 million (approximately FJ$20.30 million) into various housing initiatives, with NZ$1.75 million (about FJ$2.36 million) specifically allocated to support the Ministry of Housing’s efforts. This investment will aid in technical assistance, strategic planning, institutional strengthening, and the establishment of a national housing database over the next three years.

According to Mr. Nalumisa, this funding will empower the Ministry to allocate resources more effectively towards both new and ongoing housing projects. In addition, the Model Towns Charitable Trust will receive NZ$6,170,533 (FJ$8.4 million), with NZ$3.6 million (approximately FJ$4.87 million) designated for the Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) Programme. This specific program will target improvements in sanitation management across six informal settlements in the greater Suva area.

The partnership between NZ MFAT and the Ministry of Housing is founded on mutual trust and aims to build a robust institutional collaboration that enhances effectiveness and capacity within the housing sector. The government will also provide technical support to refine policies and planning strategies, finishing the national housing policy, and offering financial assistance for the Ministry’s Strategic Plan for the years 2025–2029.

This investment represents a significant step towards addressing housing challenges in Fiji and reflects a long-term commitment to improving living conditions for vulnerable communities. It is hopeful that these initiatives will foster a more sustainable and inclusive development trajectory for the nation.

With ongoing support and investment, the partnership positions Fiji for a stronger future, especially for low-income families who will benefit from improved housing and living conditions.
