The Ministry of Housing in Fiji has announced a collaborative initiative with New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZ MFAT) to enhance socio-economic conditions for low-income residents through improved access to affordable and quality housing. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, revealed that the New Zealand government is contributing over NZ$15 million (FJ$20.30 million), including NZ$1.75 million (FJ$2.36 million) designated for the Ministry of Housing.

This financial support aims to bolster technical assistance, strategic planning, and institutional development while facilitating the establishment of a comprehensive national housing database over the next three years. Minister Nalumisa highlighted that these funds would enable the Ministry to more effectively distribute resources for both new initiatives and ongoing projects.

In addition, the Model Towns Charitable Trust will receive NZ$6,170,533 (FJ$8.4 million), with NZ$3.6 million (FJ$4.87 million) specifically allocated to the Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) Programme. This initiative is set to enhance sanitation management in six informal settlements within the greater Suva area.

The partnership reflects a strong commitment to enhancing policies and developing a regulatory framework, ultimately leading to the finalization of a national housing policy. Furthermore, financial assistance will support the Ministry’s Strategic Plan for 2025-2029. The collaboration is built on mutual trust, with the objective of establishing a proficient institutional partnership that focuses on capacity-building and improving operational effectiveness.

This initiative represents a hopeful step forward for many communities in Fiji, as it addresses pressing housing needs while also fostering sustainable development practices. Investing in infrastructure and housing not only uplifts the living conditions for low-income families but also promotes economic stability and resilience within the region.

Overall, this partnership between New Zealand and Fiji is a promising example of international collaboration that prioritizes community welfare and sustainable development.
