The Kinoya community has expressed ongoing frustration over the prolonged neglect of their initiative to build a multi-purpose sports court at the Velau grounds, a project that has been a focal point for local residents for the past ten years. Community president Viniana Sinaitakala Seru has taken the lead in reaching out to government officials for support in realizing this crucial development.
Seru noted that the community has invested significant effort into fundraising activities, such as organizing Kinoya Day, in hopes of gathering the necessary resources to bring the project to fruition. She emphasized the importance of this court for the youth, stating, “We have so many teams and clubs in our community that need a proper place to play.” The planned facility aims to provide a venue for popular sports like volleyball, netball, and basketball.
The absence of such a recreational facility is seen as detrimental to the aspirations of young athletes in the area. Seru pointed out that the lack of proper sporting amenities could lead youths to engage in undesirable activities, including crime and substance abuse. By providing the youth with constructive avenues for expression through sports, the community hopes to deter them from negative influences.
The Kinoya initiative has received attention from prominent figures, including former Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate and current Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo, who are aware of the community’s requests for land and support. Excitement builds as the Kinoya community prepares for an upcoming Kinoya Day on November 29, which will welcome Minister Vosarogo as a guest. Seru expressed optimism, stating that with the backing of both the Nasinu Town Council and the Government, the dream of having a sports facility is inching closer to reality.
Their efforts reflect a potential shift towards better support for youth and community development initiatives within the region. In light of recent strides in sports infrastructure across the country, including newly inaugurated multipurpose courts in various locations—such as a $169,000 facility in Naitasiri and another valued at $171,439.39 in Lautoka—the Kinoya community’s aspirations could align with a broader governmental commitment to enhance recreational opportunities for youth throughout Fiji. The pursuit of the multi-purpose court in Kinoya symbolizes hope for both the residents and the youth, promising a brighter future filled with opportunities for engagement and community spirit.
