King Charles III has expressed his disappointment over not being able to visit Fiji during his recent tour of the Pacific. The tour wrapped up at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Samoa in October.

His sentiments were shared while he was receiving the Letters of Credence from Fiji’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Jovilisi Vulailai Suveinakama, at Buckingham Palace last Thursday. The High Commissioner was accompanied by his partner, Nancy Evans.

During the meeting, King Charles III conveyed, “I am heartily saddened not to have come to Fiji but it was doctors’ advice. I was pleased to meet the Prime Minister at CHOGM in Samoa. I am still keen to get to Fiji. Please send my regards to His Excellency the President. Fiji is very much in my heart.”

Additionally, the King highlighted potential opportunities for enhancing economic collaboration, particularly with regards to Fiji’s mahogany and sugar industries. He also recognized the significant contributions of the over 2,000 Fijian soldiers currently serving in the British Armed Forces, emphasizing their vital role in bolstering the United Kingdom’s defense capabilities.

The Fiji High Commission in London, led by Mr. Suveinakama, plays a crucial role in representing Fiji not just in the UK but also in several other nations, including the Republic of Ireland, the Kingdom of Morocco, and the Holy See.

This situation illustrates the strong ties between Fiji and the UK, as well as the ongoing interest from both leaders to strengthen their relationship further. The King’s expression of interest in Fiji’s economic sectors and his acknowledgment of Fijian contributions to the British military highlight the potential for fruitful collaboration in the future.

Overall, there remains a hopeful outlook for future visits and enhanced cooperation, reflecting a commitment to nurturing these important connections.
