During his recent Pacific tour, King Charles III expressed disappointment for not being able to visit Fiji. His tour concluded with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa in October. The King conveyed his sentiments while receiving the Letters of Credence from Fiji’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Jovilisi Vulailai Suveinakama, at Buckingham Palace last Thursday, where the High Commissioner was accompanied by his partner, Nancy Evans.
King Charles stated, “I am heartily saddened not to have come to Fiji but it was doctors’ advice,” while also noting his pleasure in meeting the Fijian Prime Minister at the CHOGM event. He emphasized his desire to visit Fiji in the future and asked the High Commissioner to extend his regards to the President of Fiji. The King expressed that Fiji holds a special place in his heart.
Furthermore, King Charles III highlighted potential opportunities for enhanced economic collaboration, particularly mentioning interests in the mahogany and sugar industries of Fiji. He also acknowledged the significant contributions of over 2,000 Fijian soldiers who serve in the British Armed Forces, recognizing their vital role in strengthening the United Kingdom’s defense capabilities.
In a broader context, this exchange reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts and the potential for strengthened bilateral relations between Fiji and the United Kingdom. The King’s expressed interest in visiting Fiji and enhancing economic ties offers a hopeful outlook for future cooperation.
The Fiji High Commission in London, represented by Mr. Suveinakama, oversees diplomatic relations not just in the UK but also in the Republic of Ireland, the Kingdom of Morocco, and the Holy See, underscoring Fiji’s expanding global engagements.
