Fiji Bati player Viliame Kikau has been honored with the Bulldogs’ top accolade, the Dr. George Peponis Medal, recognizing him as the Bulldogs’ 2024 NRL Player of the Year. The 30-year-old played a crucial role in the team’s return to the finals after a six-year absence.
Kikau showcased one of his finest seasons in the NRL, participating in 22 matches where he scored four tries, assisted in another four, achieved 41 offloads, and broke through the defense on ten occasions.
Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata praised Kikau’s recognition as well-deserved, stating, “Kikau is Kikau. He has been consistent since the start and continues to impress. He is a fantastic player—calm and composed, yet formidable with the ball.”
Kikau made his international debut for Fiji in 2015 during the Melanesian Cup match against Papua New Guinea, contributing from the interchange bench in the 22–10 victory at Robina Stadium. He later debuted in the NRL with the Penrith Panthers in 2017 against the Wests Tigers, scoring a try in a commanding 36–2 win.
Kativerata noted the Bulldogs’ surprising success, commenting, “The Bulldogs have made the finals when no one expected them to, just as no one anticipated Kikau receiving this award.”
Currently, Kikau is contracted with the Bulldogs for four years on a $3.2 million deal that began in 2023. He also celebrated a significant milestone, playing his 150th game as the Bulldogs triumphed over the Dragons 28-10 in Round 23.
Kativerata is set to announce a strong squad, blending experienced players and fresh talent for the upcoming Pacific Nations Challenge. He mentioned ongoing discussions with players like Mark Nawaqanitawase and young talent James Valevatu, indicating a focus on incorporating young forwards into the squad.
Also likely to be selected are Wests Tigers’ 19-year-old prop Jordan Miller, Dolphin’s Michael Waqa, and promising forward Kylan Mafoa. Kativerata plans to pair Kurt Donohue and Joe Lovodua in the halves, anticipating an exciting lineup featuring dynamic players throughout.
Additionally, four local players are expected to be included in the extended squad, highlighting the comeback of Keresi Maya, alongside potential selections Taane Milne, Waqa Blake, and Semi Valemei for the center positions.
