Kikau Braces for Tough Clash Against PNG: Can Fiji Bati Rise to the Challenge?

Viliame Kikau, a key player for the Vodafone Fiji Bati, is full of optimism ahead of their match against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls this Saturday night. The 29-year-old forward described the physicality of the Kumuls as akin to being hit by a “ton of bricks,” emphasizing the formidable challenge they pose.

Kikau acknowledged the tough competition from their Melanesian counterparts, noting that it would not be an easy game. With the support of the home crowd, he hopes the Bati will deliver an impressive performance.

He stated, “It’s a big game with the PNG brothers; they are a physical team – they come out hard from the first minute to the end. It feels like a ton of bricks running at you the whole 80 minutes.”

Having missed the previous Pacific Bowl Championship in PNG to prepare for the 2024 NRL season with the Bulldogs, Kikau has taken on a leadership role during training sessions at Albert Park. He reflected on his early days in the team, recalling how he was once a shy newcomer who relied on senior players for guidance.

“To have a voice and communicate, especially for those boys who haven’t played much in the NRL, helps build their confidence for the upcoming game,” Kikau said.

The Bati squad features several younger players, including teenagers Jordan Miller, who is expected to make his debut, and Jethro Rinakama. Kikau pointed out that many Fijian youngsters tend to be reserved, which can hinder communication.

“They’re really shy; it takes time for them to feel comfortable talking,” he noted. “I’m just here to support them and ensure they learn and grow from this experience.”

As the team prepares for the match, Kikau remains focused and determined to lead the Bati to success.
