A representative from the Substance Abuse Advisory Council (SAAC), Josua Naisele, has highlighted concerning trends of children using or misusing drugs as a way to cope with anxiety. This statement was made during a recent congress hosted by the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority and the Ministry of Education at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi.
Naisele pointed out that many parents lack the knowledge and tools to effectively address their children’s substance abuse issues. He emphasized that during counseling, a significant number of students admit to using drugs as a response to experiences of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. He urged the need for concerted efforts to ensure children’s emotional well-being is prioritized, stating that teachers should assess students’ emotional stability before starting classes as a vital part of their roles.
The issue is compounded by domestic abuse, which Naisele noted can lead children to seek solace in drugs as an escape from turbulent home environments. He explained that the cycle of abuse often perpetuates itself, with children who experience violence potentially becoming perpetrators in the future.
Furthermore, he remarked on the impact of severe corporal punishment and a culture that normalizes drug use within families. Such factors negatively affect children’s perceptions, leading them to believe that drug use is a standard behavior. Naisele called attention to the importance of equipping parents with effective parenting skills to help mitigate these issues.
This pressing matter points towards a need for comprehensive community education on the impacts of substance abuse and the importance of nurturing positive family environments. By addressing these underlying issues and providing strong support mechanisms, there is hope that children will find healthier coping strategies and ultimately lead happier lives.
In summary, the growing challenge of drug use among children necessitates immediate attention and action from parents, educators, and communities to foster environments that promote emotional stability and resilience.
