Young athletes in Fiji enthusiastically participated in the Fiji Football Association’s School Holiday Football Development Programme, held at the Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa, Suva. This initiative aims to nurture budding football talents among boys and girls aged six to 16, and it is part of a broader national effort to engage youth in sports.
Sushil Singh, the head of football development for the southern region, provided insights into the program, which commenced earlier this week and will extend through the first term school holidays. “This program is open to all young boys and girls, and we’ve actively promoted it on social media to ensure parents are informed,” he noted. Singh highlighted the importance of inclusivity, as many returning participants continue their journey in the program while new participants are also welcomed to join.
The School Holiday Football Programme serves as a vital pathway for young talents to enhance their skills and gain potential national representation. Singh emphasized, “It’s a way for us to help these young boys and girls who have an interest in football develop their skills and prepare them for future opportunities.”
Moreover, similar programs are being launched in other regions, such as Lautoka, catering to children aged seven to 15. These initiatives focus on providing skill development, teamwork, and expert coaching without any financial burden on families. Such programs promote physical fitness and essential life skills like teamwork and social interaction, contributing positively to the participants’ personal growth.
As the School Holiday Football Programmes spread across Fiji, they present a commendable opportunity for young people to remain active, build friendships, and possibly cultivate a lifelong passion for football. This commitment to youth engagement through sports is not only an investment in athletic development but also in personal and social development, fostering a brighter future for Fiji’s youth.
