The much-anticipated 2025 Vodafone Deans Trophy and Weet-Bix Raluve secondary schools rugby competitions are officially set to kick off this Saturday. The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has confirmed the full sanctioning of these competitions following extensive consultations with the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU) and the Ministry of Education, addressing concerns that previously cast doubt on the season’s commencement.

FRU’s CEO Koli Sewabu announced that discussions led to the formation of a new interim committee, tasked with tackling governance issues, including the use of public resources and aligning regulations with national standards. Sewabu expressed gratitude for reaching this agreement, which he believes represents a significant victory for youth athletes and the dedicated individuals behind the scenes.

The immediate focus of the interim committee will be to resolve longstanding concerns surrounding school facilities and teaching staff involvement while implementing governance reforms to improve the competition structure and ensure a smooth transition through the years ahead.

Despite earlier setbacks, schools across Fiji have been proactive in their preparations, with many zones reporting record participation and heightened enthusiasm among students. The FSSRU’s vice-president for development, Biu Colati, lauded the commitment of school administrators and coaches, stating that this year’s preparations have reached unprecedented levels, showcasing an eager readiness to compete.

Sewabu assured the public that logistical considerations regarding grounds and facilities have been adequately addressed, with all zones expressing readiness for the matches ahead. The FRU is also working closely with sponsors to secure funding for development programs aimed at enhancing player pathways from school rugby to professional opportunities.

The sanctioning of this year’s competitions marks not just a return to sport for schools, but a broader initiative to fortify player development systems. Sewabu highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships with educational institutions and global rugby entities to better support students transitioning into professional or domestic competitions.

Fiji’s rugby community remains hopeful as they approach the weekend, looking forward to an exhilarating season that promises to foster talent, reinforce community spirit, and deliver exciting rugby action.
