Youngsters in Fiji enthusiastically participated in the recent session of the Fiji Football Association’s School Holiday Football Development Programme at the Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa, Suva. The program caters to boys and girls aged six to 16 and is part of a nationwide initiative aimed at nurturing young football talents.
Sushil Singh, head of football development for the southern region, outlined the goals and structure of the program, noting that it began earlier this week and will run through the first term of school holidays. “We have opened this program to all young boys and girls, and we’ve actively advertised it through our social media platforms to engage and inform parents,” Singh stated. He mentioned that many of the participants have been in the system for the last two years, while new children are also encouraged to join.
This initiative is not only a great opportunity for skill development but also serves as a pathway for aspiring footballers to aim for national representation. “It’s a way for us to help these young boys and girls who are interested in football to develop their skills and get them ready for future opportunities,” Singh added.
Additionally, similar programs are being launched in places like Lautoka, targeting children aged seven to 15. These programs emphasize skill development, teamwork, expert coaching, and provide competitions without any financial burden on families. Such initiatives not only promote athletic prowess but also encourage essential life skills such as teamwork and social interaction.
The School Holiday Football Programmes are a commendable investment in the youth, encouraging physical fitness while also creating a positive impact on personal development. They offer young people a chance to stay active, build friendships, and potentially cultivate a lifelong passion for the sport. As these initiatives grow across Fiji, they hold the promise of fostering the next generation of football stars while strengthening community bonds.
