Keyless Crisis: Fiji Police Warn Against Unattended Vehicles

The Fiji Police Force is issuing a strong warning to vehicle owners regarding the dangers of leaving cars unattended with keys in the ignition. This advisory follows two recent incidents where vehicles were stolen by opportunistic criminals who found the keys inside the cars.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, underscored the importance of vigilance in vehicle security, stating that these opportunists often show a complete disregard for the safety of individuals, including families that may be present in the vehicle during the theft. Driu explained that this neglect not only increases the likelihood of theft but also puts a strain on police resources as they attempt to recover the stolen vehicles.

“Opportunists have no regard for anyone when they are intent on committing a crime,” Driu remarked. He detailed that upon receiving reports of vehicle theft, police will deploy checkpoints and issue alerts to all police units to prevent the stolen vehicles from being further misused in criminal activities.

With back-to-school shopping and holiday transitions expected in the coming days, the police urge the community to be mindful and take precautions to secure their vehicles. The message is clear: keeping keys out of the ignition and ensuring vehicles are locked can significantly reduce the risk of theft.

The Fiji Police’s ongoing emphasis on vehicle security is a reminder that community awareness and cooperation play a crucial role in enhancing public safety. By adopting simple measures, vehicle owners can protect their property and contribute to a safer environment for all.
