Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Seema Sharma and Director of Town & Country Planning Mohammed Ziar, visited the Keyasi New Town Development site on January 15. During this visit, the Minister received detailed updates from the project’s consultant and contractor regarding the ongoing civil works.
Despite facing significant challenges due to heavy rainfall in the area, the team reported that the bulk earthworks and the installation of essential services—such as stormwater drainage, sewer systems, and fire hydrants—along the proposed main access road are nearing completion. Minister Nalumisa underscored the project’s importance for the residents of Nadroga/Navosa, urging the contractor to ensure that civil works are completed promptly.
The Keyasi New Town Development is an ambitious initiative that will feature 27 commercial lots, four industrial lots, and three open space lots. It will also include provisions for civic amenities such as a market, bus stand, civic centre, service station, and dedicated areas for the National Fire Authority, a wastewater treatment plant, and an electricity substation.
This development is part of a broader $10.4 million investment under the Keiyasi Town Development Project, with Phase 1 expected to conclude by October 2025. This initiative not only aims to enhance local infrastructure but also seeks to stimulate economic growth and improve access to essential services in the region.
The ongoing commitment to this project amidst weather-related challenges reflects a hopeful trajectory for the future of Nadroga/Navosa, showcasing the government’s dedication to improving community facilities and opportunities for local residents. As the project progresses, it is anticipated to uplift the economic landscape and enhance the overall quality of life for the area’s inhabitants.
