Immunity has been granted to one of the ten individuals accused in the trafficking case involving over $2 billion worth of methamphetamine discovered in Nadi last year. The ruling was made during a session at the Lautoka High Court, presided over by Justice Aruna Aluthge. Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions John Rabuku confirmed that Keanie Lilo McPherson, who is one of two defendants involved in immunity negotiations with the State, will now be included on the witness list.
While McPherson’s immunity was granted, discussions with another defendant, Ratu Aporosa Davelevu, reportedly did not result in a similar agreement. Among the gathered evidence, of the total 129 witness statements, 70 individuals are set to testify in the upcoming trial scheduled to reconvene on April 15.
This case, reflective of the judicial system’s rigorous approach to addressing serious drug-related offenses, emphasizes a strong commitment to pursuing justice in the fight against drug trafficking. The involvement of multiple witnesses illustrates the thorough preparatory efforts by law enforcement and prosecution, which aim to maintain public safety and uphold the integrity of legal processes.
As the trial date approaches, there remains a sense of hope that the stringent measures being taken will contribute to effectively tackling drug-related issues in the region, highlighting the importance of continued judicial engagement in such serious matters.
