The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is set to convene this upcoming Monday, where significant discussions will revolve around filling key vacancies following the recent election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the importance of swiftly appointing individuals to essential roles under the COC’s advisory mandate to the President.
The COC plays a critical role in advising the President on various appointments, including:
– Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission,
– Chair and members of the Electoral Commission,
– Supervisor of Elections,
– Parliament Secretary General,
– Chair and members of the Public Service Commission,
– Police Commissioner,
– Commissioner of Fiji Correction Services,
– Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces,
– Auditor General, and
– Reserve Bank Governor.
Seruiratu expressed optimism about the upcoming meeting, noting its potential for advancing crucial appointments that will require the endorsement of the newly elected President, Ratu Naiqama.
One of the pressing vacancies is that of the Commissioner of Police, a position that Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has repeatedly highlighted as vital for maintaining law and order. Prime Minister and COC chair Sitiveni Rabuka commended the Acting Commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, for his performance but acknowledged the necessity for appointing a permanent Commissioner.
Senior G17 Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya reiterated the urgency of filling these roles, stating, “A lot of things are pending, and I understand it follows due processes,” while also highlighting the government’s awareness of the necessary steps.
This meeting represents an important opportunity for the COC to restore and enhance governance structures that will ultimately benefit the nation.
In conclusion, the upcoming COC meeting signifies a critical step toward ensuring effective governance in Fiji. With a clear focus on essential appointments, there is hope that these decisions will lead to a stronger and more stable institutional framework, fostering progress for the country.
