The COC plays a critical advisory role to the President regarding appointments to significant positions, including:

– Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission
– Chair and members of the Electoral Commission
– Supervisor of Elections
– Parliament Secretary General
– Chair and members of the Public Service Commission
– Police Commissioner
– Fiji Correction Services Commissioner
– Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces
– Auditor General
– Governor of the Reserve Bank

Seruiratu noted the importance of the upcoming meeting, stating, “We are looking forward to that for some of the appointments that will require his (Ratu Naiqama) endorsement.” One crucial position still awaiting appointment is that of the Commissioner of Police. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has repeatedly underscored the significance of appointing a substantive police commissioner.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also chairs the COC, acknowledged the efforts of the Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, while recognizing the necessity for a permanent appointment. Senior Opposition Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya expressed similar views, highlighting that several important matters are pending but are expected to follow due processes.

The forthcoming meeting of the COC is a promising step towards stabilizing these vital governmental roles and addressing the immediate needs of the Fijian people.

In summary, the meeting of the COC on Monday is expected to facilitate crucial appointments that will enhance governance and public safety in Fiji, thus contributing to the country’s continued development and stability.
