The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene on Monday to address essential appointments following the election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the urgency of filling crucial vacancies that fall under the COC’s formal recommendation responsibilities.

The COC serves as an advisory body to the President regarding the appointment of various key positions within the government. These include the Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Chair and members of the Electoral Commission, the Supervisor of Elections, the Parliament Secretary General, the Chair and members of the Public Service Commission, the Police Commissioner, the Fiji Correction Services Commissioner, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Auditor General, and the Governor of the Reserve Bank.

Seruiratu expressed anticipation for the upcoming meeting and the necessary endorsements from the newly elected President, Ratu Naiqama. Of particular note is the vacant position of Commissioner of Police, which Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has emphasized is vital for maintaining law and order. Prime Minister and COC chair Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged that while Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew is performing well, the official appointment of a permanent Commissioner is critical.

Senior G17 Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya supported the call for timely appointments, recognizing the need for due processes to be followed while reiterating that the government is aware of the tasks ahead.

This gathering of the COC presents an important opportunity for the new administration to strengthen its governance by filling vital leadership roles that can enhance public trust and institutional functionality.

The upcoming meeting holds promise, as it signals a decisive step towards effective governance and accountability in Fiji’s public service. It reflects a collaborative approach among political leaders to prioritize the nation’s needs during this transitional phase.
