Kevin Ligani Naiqama, the former captain of the Vodafone Fiji Bati, received a memorable farewell during the Pacific Bowl championship game on Saturday night. In a commanding performance, the Bati triumphed over the Cook Islands with a score of 56-6 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, marking this match as Naiqama’s final appearance on the field.
At 35 years old and hailing from Nabuna, Koro in Lomaiviti, Naiqama expressed his intention to spend quality time with his family and reflect on his illustrious rugby career. Having proudly represented Fiji in three Rugby League World Cups, including captaining the team in the 2022 tournament in England, Naiqama has earned 24 international caps for the Bati. He has celebrated significant success in his career, winning three NRL Grand Finals and two Super League titles.
Reflecting on his experiences in Fiji over the last two weeks, Naiqama described it as an emotional journey. “I’m really honored and privileged to represent my country – it was just so fitting to have my last game here in Fiji,” he stated. He also mentioned his focus on supporting his wife, Lily, in their future plans together as they navigate the next steps.
Naiqama praised the team’s performance and emphasized that the Bati are well-positioned to pursue the Pacific Bowl Championship if the Cook Islands can secure a victory against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls. His playing tenure includes stints in the Super League and NRL, showcasing his versatility across teams, which has included the Newcastle Knights, Penrith Panthers, Wests Tigers, and Huddersfield Giants.
Notably, Naiqama expressed the strong connection that representing his country creates, saying, “There’s a commonality and a thread that tied us together.” He noted the unique bond formed through heritage in representing Fiji, which goes beyond mere club affiliations, making the experience incredibly special. The sight of his family proudly wearing shirts in his honor added to the emotional experience of his farewell.
This farewell marks not just the end of a chapter for Naiqama, but it also highlights the values of dedication and family that are central to the sport and its culture in Fiji, leaving fans hopeful for his future endeavors both on and off the field.
