Former Vodafone Fiji Bati captain Kevin Ligani Naiqama received an emotional farewell during Saturday night’s Pacific Bowl championship game, marking the end of his illustrious rugby league career. The Bati team delivered a commanding performance, defeating the Cook Islands 56-6 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, in the second round of the Pacific Bowl Championship.
At 35 years old and originating from Nabuna, Koro in Lomaiviti, Naiqama expressed his plans to spend quality time with his family and reflect on his experiences in the sport. He has had an impressive international career, representing Fiji in three Rugby League World Cups and captaining the team during two of those tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup in England where Fiji reached the quarter-finals.
Throughout his career, Naiqama earned a total of 24 caps for the Bati and enjoyed significant club success, winning three NRL Grand Finals and two Super League titles. Reflecting on his recent time in Fiji, he described it as an unparalleled and emotional experience, emphasizing how honored he felt to represent his country. “It was just so fitting to have my last game here in Fiji,” Naiqama remarked.
Looking towards the future, Naiqama acknowledged that he would consider his wife Lily’s aspirations as they both navigate this new chapter together. He also praised the performance of his teammates, expressing optimism about the Bati’s prospects in the Pacific Bowl Championship, contingent on the outcome of the Cook Islands’ match against Papua New Guinea.
Naiqama’s journey included stints in both the NRL and the Super League, recently playing for Huddersfield, where he has made 52 appearances since 2023. He eloquently articulated the unique bond that players feel when representing Fiji Bati, noting that their connection is rooted in heritage and family, which elevates the experience of wearing the national jersey.
As he took in the support from his family, who donned T-shirts featuring his name and face, it became clear that Naiqama’s legacy goes beyond the field, marked by years of dedication and achievement. His story serves as an inspiration for many, showcasing the pride and passion that come with representing one’s country in sports.
