Kemu Valetini, the versatile back for Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, is looking forward to a significant moment as he prepares for a three-day training camp in his ancestral homeland, Kadavu. The 30-year-old will visit the island for the first time next week, allowing him to connect with his roots and meet the community where his father originated.
“I’m pretty excited to go to my village and see the place where my dad was brought up and meet the people there,” Valetini shared. He expressed gratitude to his teammates and management for selecting Kadavu as the camp location.
Kemu comes from a family of rugby talent; his younger brother Rob plays for the Australian Wallabies, while their father, Manu, had a successful playing career with Lautoka. Valetini’s other brother, Osea Koliloa, was admired as one of Fiji’s top openside flankers.
Within the Drua squad, several players share a connection to Kadavu, including Simione Kuruvoli, Philip Baselala, and Etonia Waqa. Valetini, who typically plays at No. 10, has recently been transitioned to second-five eighth ahead of the 2024 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season. He remains adaptable, stating he is content with either position, given the quality players competing for places in the backline.
Valetini acknowledged that the upcoming 2025 season may prove more challenging, highlighting the strong competition among teammates. However, he views this as an opportunity for growth and improvement, which will ultimately benefit the entire team.
The training camp in Kadavu not only strengthens team bonds but also serves as a reminder of the importance of family, heritage, and community in the world of sports. Valetini’s enthusiasm for this experience reflects a hopeful outlook for the Drua as they prepare for an exciting season ahead.
