Kavewa Island’s Green Revolution: A Solar-Powered Future Awaits!

Kavewa Island in Fiji’s Northern Division is making significant strides toward sustainable living with the recent launch of a solar-powered freezer and three 5,000-litre water tanks. The initiative, which cost the government approximately $19,000, is backed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management as part of its self-help program and was developed in response to the needs of the local women’s group.

The solar freezer is expected to transform the community’s reliance on the mainland for ice, providing a vital resource for storing seafood and other perishables. This enhancement will particularly benefit local women, fostering more income-generating opportunities. Setareki Dakuiboca, the Divisional Planning Officer for the Northern Division, emphasized that the project also serves to elevate Kavewa as a potential eco-tourism destination, leveraging its pristine marine environment and cultural heritage.

The project is designed to strengthen community resilience against climate-related challenges, directly impacting 22 households. Villager Talei Senibaravi expressed gratitude for the project, highlighting the island’s significance as a home to a Marine Protected Area that includes a nesting site for the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle.

This initiative aligns with other efforts by the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, which has delivered solar freezers to various rural fishing communities, reflecting a broader commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of isolated areas while promoting renewable energy solutions.

The collaboration among local women, supported by the Cagimaiwai Women’s Club, showcases the spirit of community engagement as they drive toward a more sustainable and resilient future. Their ongoing projects display not only a commitment to economic empowerment but also to environmental stewardship, inspiring hope for continued progress in Kavewa and similar areas.
