Kava’s European Journey: Fiji’s Economic Boost Awaits

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has applauded a recent ruling by a German court that could allow kava to be marketed in Europe and beyond. Rabuka noted that this development represents significant news for Fiji’s kava industry and presents a tremendous opportunity for both Fiji and the Pacific region.

On June 18, 2024, a German court lifted a ban that had prevented kava from being sold as a pharmaceutical product for over two decades. Although the decision is currently under appeal, there is optimism that kava could soon be legally available in Germany.

Rabuka emphasized that this change would not only enhance kava exports but also support the thousands of Fijians who depend on kava farming for their livelihoods.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica also praised the court’s decision, describing it as a significant step towards expanding Fiji’s international presence and bolstering the nation’s economy. He underscored the government’s commitment to assisting kava producers in making the most of this opportunity.

Kamikamica stated that the Government is dedicated to ensuring Fiji meets international standards so it can effectively capitalize on new market openings. “Let’s continue to support our kava industry as we progress toward a brighter future,” he urged.
