Kava’s European Dream: A Game Changer for Fiji’s Economy!

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has lauded a recent court ruling in Germany that may pave the way for the sale of kava in Europe and beyond. He highlighted this development as excellent news for Fiji’s kava industry, presenting significant opportunities for Fiji and the wider Pacific region.

On June 18, 2024, a German court lifted a longstanding ban that had prevented kava from being marketed as a pharmaceutical product for over two decades. While the ruling is currently under appeal, there is optimism that kava could soon be legally sold in Germany.

Rabuka noted that this decision would not only enhance kava exports but also provide support to the many Fijians dependent on kava cultivation.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica also praised the judgment, describing it as a major step forward in expanding Fiji’s global presence and strengthening the economy. He reiterated the government’s commitment to assisting kava producers in capitalizing on this opportunity.

Kamikamica added that the Government is diligently working to ensure Fiji is prepared to meet international standards, enabling them to take full advantage of new market openings. He encouraged continued support for the kava industry as Fiji looks toward a promising future.
