Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his support for a recent German court ruling that may facilitate the sale of kava in Europe and other regions. This decision is seen as a significant boost for Fiji’s kava industry, presenting a substantial opportunity for the nation and the wider Pacific area.
On June 18, 2024, a German court lifted a two-decade restriction that had prohibited kava from being marketed as a pharmaceutical product. Although the ruling is currently under appeal, there remains optimism that kava could soon be legally sold in Germany.
Rabuka highlighted that this development would enhance Fiji’s kava exports and provide vital support to the many Fijians dependent on kava farming. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica also praised the decision, viewing it as a crucial step towards increasing Fiji’s global presence and strengthening the economy. He reassured that the government is dedicated to helping kava producers take advantage of this promising opportunity.
Kamikamica noted that the government is diligently preparing to meet international standards to capitalize on new market openings effectively. He encouraged continued support for the Kava industry as Fiji strives towards a more prosperous future.
