The kava bar industry is flourishing in Fiji’s capital, Suva, but expanding to other regions presents unique challenges. Tokasa Ramaqa has taken on this challenge by launching Navatu Kava Lounge, now the second kava bar in Labasa, where it is gaining popularity just five months after opening.
Ramaqa made the bold decision to leave her job in March 2024 to pursue her passion for entrepreneurship. Prior to the opening, her team meticulously conducted market research on local kava consumption trends, identifying the demand and competition in Labasa. Since its inception, Navatu has carved a niche by providing an inviting atmosphere with exceptional customer service.
The lounge is designed to offer a calming environment that is air-conditioned and smoke-free, allowing patrons to enjoy their kava in comfort, away from Labasa’s hustle. The venue features a stage for Open Mic nights on Thursdays and live performances on Fridays, adding to the atmosphere and engaging the community.
One of the distinguishing features of Navatu is the quality of its kava. Ramaqa ensures the kava is sourced directly from the lush hills of Vanua Levu, using mature plants to guarantee purity and taste, and collaborates with local suppliers to maintain freshness. This commitment has led to a surprising level of demand for kava in Labasa, with customers increasingly preferring it over alcohol.
Ramaqa has observed a significant shift in social drinking habits. “Traditionally, kava was reserved for village gatherings. Now, with kava bars on the rise, people can enjoy a lively bar-like setting while consuming kava,” she explained.
Despite the challenges associated with running a business, such as efficiently managing operations and navigating competition, Ramaqa encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to follow their dreams. Her advice is simple yet powerful: “You only have one life, so live your dreams.”
Navatu Kava Lounge has attracted notable local artists, including singer Savuto Vakadewavosa, who appreciates the inclusive environment the lounge fosters. He highlighted the significance of kava in Fijian culture, particularly its role as a medium for social bonding and storytelling.
This enterprise exemplifies that the kava bar culture can thrive beyond Suva, proving that with determination and quality service, there’s potential for success in other regions of Fiji. By focusing on local engagement and high-quality offerings, Navatu Kava Lounge stands as a hopeful beacon for the future of kava in Labasa.
