A group of Kava Dealers in Fiji, known as Veitamani Kava Dealers, is making significant strides in establishing a business aimed at supporting local farmers by facilitating the sale of high-quality yaqona (kava). This initiative, highlighted by Selemo Banicau, a 29-year-old entrepreneur from Vusasivo, Natewa, has been operating for just over a month and is already showing positive results.
The primary goal of this business is to assist local farmers in overcoming challenges they face, especially in securing timely payments for their produce. Veitamani Kava Dealers operates from multiple villages in the Natewa area, including Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, Naqaravatu, and nearby communities. Currently, kava is sold at prices ranging from $10 to $11 per kilogram, influenced by demand and quality. The dealers ensure reliable purchasing from farmers and are adapting their strategies to enhance market access and profitability.
Banicau noted that the business has the potential to generate incomes between $5,000 to $6,000 weekly through its sales, allowing farmers to improve their living conditions and even build homes. This cooperative approach not only benefits the dealers but also fosters financial stability within the local community.
While the business faces challenges, such as inconsistent weather conditions affecting kava production, there are plans in place to expand operations further and possibly establish a more significant cooperative among local farmers. Banicau encourages fellow villagers not to hesitate in pursuing such beneficial ventures and to have faith that positive outcomes will follow through their hard work and divine guidance.
This endeavor by the Veitamani Kava Dealers reflects a growing movement towards community-based business models that empower local farmers and contribute to economic resilience in Fiji. It holds promise for fostering greater collaboration and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
Overall, this initiative showcases a hopeful trajectory for local economies in Fiji through cooperative business practices and aims to uplift the community by addressing the common challenges faced by farmers in the yaqona market.
