A new kava lounge named “Valekava” opened its doors today in Lami, marking a significant milestone in Fiji’s economy and cultural heritage. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for MSMEs, Manoa Kamikamica, attended the opening ceremony, expressing that the establishment symbolizes a vital transformation in both the economic landscape and cultural appreciation of kava in Fiji.

Kamikamica emphasized the role of Valekava in enhancing Fiji’s export capabilities, stating, “Our people have always understood the cultural and spiritual significance of kava, and now we are recognizing its commercial and economic potential.” He stressed the importance of the global wellness industry, which is increasingly acknowledging kava for its calming properties. Further government assistance is in place to support stakeholders in ensuring quality exports while the lounge aims to innovate its offerings to attract diverse customers.

Lina Vauvau, Retail Manager of Lami Kava, indicated that the establishment plans to introduce modern kava blends, which will appeal to newcomers to kava or those seeking alternative flavors. This aligns with previous initiatives in the kava sector, showcasing efforts to diversify product offerings and enhance their appeal to both local and international markets.

Similar advancements in Fiji’s kava industry, like the launch of Lami Kava’s “Islands Nature” product line comprising traditional wellness products, underline the sector’s potential to grow into a billion-dollar industry that provides substantial benefits to local communities and farmers. Fiji’s robust commitment to maintaining high quality and expanding its kava exports also echoes in these developments.

These steps highlight a promising trajectory for the kava sector, opening doors for economic growth while preserving the rich cultural significance of kava in Fiji. The continuous growth and innovation within the kava industry suggest a bright future not just for businesses like Valekava, but also for all stakeholders involved in kava cultivation and production.
