Concerns have emerged regarding the fluctuating prices of kava, impacting farmers more severely than middlemen or producers. This issue was highlighted during a kava bill consultation held recently, which gathered various stakeholders including farmers, exporters, importers, and producers.
Assistant Minister for Agriculture Inosi Kuridrani emphasized the necessity of establishing a kava council dedicated to protecting the interests of farmers and ensuring that the market remains equitable. He noted that one significant problem farmers encounter is the pricing of kava, which appears unjust. Many sellers receive the same compensation for kava cultivated over three years as those who grow it for seven years.
The ongoing kava bill consultation’s primary objective is to prioritize the welfare of farmers. Plans are underway to present the bill to Cabinet this year, aiming to develop a robust market framework that emphasizes fairness and quality. This initiative reflects a promising step toward enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and creating a more balanced kava supply chain that benefits all participants.
