Kava Dreams: A New Era for Fiji’s Export Potential?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has welcomed a recent court ruling in Germany that may pave the way for kava to be sold in Europe and beyond. Rabuka described this decision as significant for Fiji’s kava sector, presenting a substantial opportunity for both Fiji and the Pacific region.

On June 18, 2024, a German court lifted a two-decade-long ban on marketing kava as a pharmaceutical product. Although the ruling is currently under appeal, there is optimism that kava could soon be legally sold in Germany.

Rabuka noted that the outcome could significantly enhance kava exports and provide essential support to thousands of Fijians dependent on kava cultivation.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica also praised the court’s decision, calling it a crucial step for expanding Fiji’s global market presence and strengthening the national economy. He reiterated the government’s dedication to assisting kava producers in seizing this opportunity.

Kamikamica stated that the government is diligently working to ensure Fiji meets international standards, preparing for the expansion of new markets. “Let’s keep supporting our kava industry as we move toward a brighter future,” he added.
