A group of kava dealers known as Veitamani Kava Dealers are making strides in supporting local farmers and boosting the kava market. Speaking on this initiative is 29-year-old Selemo Banicau from Vusasivo, Natewa, who emphasized the impact of their business aimed at aiding local communities.

In just a short period since launching their business, they have already witnessed positive progress both for their operation and the farmers. The main goal of this enterprise is to help address urgent financial needs within households by providing a reliable market for locally sourced kava.

Operating mainly in several villages around Natewa, including Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, Naqaravatu, and others nearby, the dealers are actively purchasing kava at prices ranging from $10 to $11 per kilogram, depending on quality and demand.

The momentum continues as they are actively involved in selling their kava not only locally but also to markets in Savusavu. Traditionally, kava sales have been challenging due to market fluctuations, but this initiative represents a significant step towards stabilizing incomes for farmers and ensuring quality kava reaches consumers reliably.

Banicau noted that their operation has the potential to generate earnings of $5,000 to $6,000 weekly, helping to build homes and invest in further ventures like the Fiji Holding Unit Trust. Despite facing challenges, such as inconsistent weather conditions impacting kava production, the dealers remain committed to expanding their cooperative business model.

Banicau encourages fellow farmers not to lose hope, advocating for collective efforts that could enhance their livelihoods and community welfare, reinforcing a message of resilience and cooperation.

Overall, this initiative not only supports the local economy but also embodies a spirit of unity and innovation among farmers in the region. As communities increasingly rely on homegrown resources, efforts like these could lead to sustainable development and flourishing local markets.

This story serves as a reminder of the potential for positive change through community-driven efforts. By coming together, local farmers can create a robust support system that fosters resilience and prosperity in their villages.
