Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has recently stood by the government’s decision to implement a new regulation that mandates all kava bars to close by 1 a.m. The Prime Minister asserted that this measure is intended to enhance productivity, safeguard public safety, and promote family time. “Late nights erode productivity the following workday,” Mr. Rabuka remarked in his weekly column, underscoring the rationale for the new curfew.

Under this regulation, all establishments that serve yaqona (kava) will be subject to the same closing hours as nightclubs, ensuring a consistent enforcement of these rules across the nation. Mr. Rabuka emphasized that this decision is not solely about safety, but also about cultivating healthier lifestyle habits among the population. “Hopefully, early closure of alcohol or yaqona bars will lead many to spend more time at home with our family and loved ones,” he expressed.

This initiative aligns with ongoing discussions among government officials about the impact of excessive kava consumption in Fiji. For example, Assistant Minister Sakiusa Tubuna has previously highlighted the potential dangers of kava consumption, suggesting that it may contribute to fatal road accidents. His sentiments echo concerns raised by various community leaders about the health implications associated with heavy kava drinking, particularly in relation to non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

In July, during a meeting with the Tailevu Provincial Council, Mr. Rabuka called on village leaders to monitor kava consumption in their communities. The council is focusing on strategies to reduce overconsumption and to encourage the populace to adopt healthier lifestyles, as they explore ways to bolster local economies and reduce reliance on government aid.

Through this new regulation and the ongoing discourse surrounding it, there is a promising opportunity for positive shifts in community habits regarding kava consumption, fostering not only individual well-being but also strengthening family bonds. This effort symbolizes a broader commitment to improve public health and safety in Fiji.
