Young entrepreneur Selemo Banicau, 29, from Vusasivo, Natewa, has successfully launched a business, Veitamani Kava Dealers, aimed at supporting the local farmers in marketing their kava. This initiative has been in operation for just over a month and has already shown significant promise in providing assistance to farmers, facilitating better sales of their produce.

Banicau emphasized that the main goal of this business is not only to aid local growers but also to address issues related to the quick cash needs that families often face. The Veitamani Kava Dealers are specifically targeting various communities, engaging in direct contact with farmers in several villages around Natewa and beyond, including Dawa, Vusasivo, and Nadavaci.

Currently, kava prices are fluctuating between $10 and $11 per kilogram, depending on size and quality. This pricing strategy is helping farmers to quickly receive cash for their produce, which is a critical aspect of their livelihoods.

Banicau noted the impressive sales figures that his business has achieved, with projections of earning between $5,000 and $6,000 in one week alone from kava sales in the Savusavu market. He shared that the profits are being reinvested into building their homes and growing savings through local investment channels.

However, Banicau also acknowledged the challenges posed by the region’s changing weather patterns, which can affect kava production. To bolster the business model, he is exploring cooperative strategies that could enhance operational efficiency and encourage more farmers to participate in the initiative.

He encourages fellow farmers not to hesitate in pursuing similar endeavors, emphasizing that their faith and collective action can significantly improve their circumstances and livelihoods.

This inspiring story of entrepreneurship highlights the potential for local businesses to not only elevate individual success but also strengthen community ties and economic stability in Fiji. By promoting sustainable practices and supporting local agriculture, initiatives like Veitamani Kava Dealers can foster hope and prosperity for many families in the region.
