A group of Kava Dealers in Fiji has recently launched a business initiative aimed at assisting local farmers with the sale of kava. This initiative was highlighted by 29-year-old Selemo Banicau, who hails from Vusasivo, Natewa, Cakaudrove.
Although the business has only been in operation for about a month, the dealers have observed positive growth, contributing positively to the farmers involved. The primary goal of this business venture is to support local farmers against common challenges they face, which often require quick financial solutions.
The business, named Veitamani Kava Dealers, is focused on procuring kava directly from rural communities. They are currently sourcing from several villages around Natewa, including Dawa, Vusasivo, Nadavaci, Naqaravatu, and others nearby.
Currently, the vendors are selling kava at prices ranging from $10 to $11 per kilogram, depending on quality and demand. They are working to ensure that the product is consistently available in markets, particularly in Savusavu.
Selemo noted that the company aims to generate between $5,000 to $6,000 within a week from kava sales alone. The profits will help fund their ongoing house construction projects, as well as investments in the Fiji Holding Unit Trust.
While they celebrate these successes, the Kava Dealers also face challenges, particularly concerning the area’s unpredictable weather, which can impact kava cultivation. Despite these setbacks, they are moving towards forming a cooperative business model aimed at enhancing operational stability.
Selemo also encourages fellow farmers not to fear the challenges of starting a new initiative but to seek beneficial strategies to improve their livelihoods.
This initiative provided not just a commercial opportunity but also hope for enhanced community support and economic resilience through local agriculture. By working collaboratively, these kava dealers highlight the importance of community efforts in overcoming obstacles and achieving shared goals.
