The President of the Methodist Church in Fiji, Reverend Semisi Turagavou, has issued a strong warning to ministers and deaconesses about the dangers of excessive kava consumption and smoking. During the church’s annual ministers’ retreat in Suva, he cautioned that those who display signs of excessive kava use or engage in smoking could face suspension, underlining the church’s commitment to discipline.

Reverend Turagavou urged all church leaders to adhere to a resolution set for 2024, which mandates that ministers and deaconesses abstain from smoking. He emphasized, “Breaching this resolution will result in a six-month suspension.” Additionally, he called for ministers to moderate their kava intake, stating that any leader found exhibiting physical symptoms of overconsumption could face a suspension lasting from six months to one year. The Reverend highlighted the importance of self-discipline, stressing the need for leaders to model appropriate behavior in front of both church members and God.

Looking to the future, he announced that by 2026, all church stewards would also be required to refrain from smoking, aiming to improve the church’s image. He noted, “We enter churches and see cigarette butts everywhere—this needs to change.”

This push for reform aligns with earlier messages from Reverend Turagavou regarding church leadership and its impact on membership. Concerns have been raised about the influence of kava and smoking on the church’s integrity, with many members expressing dissatisfaction with leadership behaviors. The need for leaders to embody the values of their faith is critical, as their actions significantly affect the church’s reputation and membership.

Reverend Turagavou’s initiative represents a hopeful step towards rejuvenating the Methodist Church’s community engagement and spiritual health, encouraging leaders to reflect on their popularity and behavior while emphasizing the importance of discipline and responsibility. As the church aims to grow its membership, this focus on behavioral reform within its leadership could lead to a stronger, more united congregation.

By addressing these issues, the church seeks to restore confidence among its members and assert its commitment to a healthier and more coherent spiritual environment.
