Fiji cruiserweight champion Alivereti Kauyaca is determined to secure a significant victory against Paulo Ratumaikoro at the Vodafone Arena in Suva on February 22. This win would pave the way for Kauyaca to pursue major fights abroad.
“I need this win because I’m in a build-up phase,” Kauyaca expressed to SUNsports. He emphasized the importance of achieving two or three consecutive wins to qualify for other regional titles, similar to the one he previously fought for against John Parker. Kauyaca further pointed out that local boxers must remain active at the beginning of the year to build their records as they age.
Kauyaca addressed a common sentiment among Fijian boxers regarding the lack of resources for training. He noted that despite these challenges, some Fijian fighters had previously reached the top 15 world rankings. He encourages local boxers to improve their consistency and discipline in training.
“Hard work and divine intervention are essential; everything will fall into place if you utilize the resources available and dedicate yourself fully,” he advised. He acknowledged that overseas boxers benefit from superior resources and strict dietary regimens, which contribute to their consistency.
Kauyaca urged his fellow fighters to change the traditional Fijian mindset that often leads boxers to celebrate with drinks after a fight. He reiterated that discipline is crucial, along with maintaining a rigorous training regimen.
As Kauyaca prepares for his fight, he plans to begin intense training after returning to Nadi from the Bluewater promotions launch. “We can create our own world champion here in Fiji,” he concluded with optimism.
This article highlights Kauyaca’s commitment to professional boxing and the potential for Fijian fighters to excel on the international stage despite facing limited resources. It serves as an inspiration for athletes in Fiji to strive for excellence through dedication and disciplined training.
