Alivereti Kauyaca is set to make a much-anticipated return to the local boxing scene after an 11-month hiatus. He will headline the Bluewater Boxing Promotion event in Suva on February 22, 2025, where he will defend his cruiserweight title against Paulo Ratumaikoro.

Kauyaca’s last local engagement was on March 15, 2024, at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, where he successfully defended his title against Jospeh Kwadjo. However, that bout was marred by controversy when Kauyaca was stripped of his title due to the use of illegal hand wraps. Following his camp’s appeal to the Minister for Youth and Sports, his title was reinstated.

Since then, Kauyaca has secured a contract with Craig Thomas Boxing Promotion in New Zealand. He has been training there since March and has participated in two bouts. He won his first match against MMA and kickboxer Remus Leaf by unanimous decision during Fight Night IV in August. However, he faced defeat in his second fight in September against New Zealand’s cruiserweight champion, Joseph Parker, losing by split decision.

Currently training in Nadi, Kauyaca is focusing on his upcoming title defense against Ratumaikoro. He emphasized the rigorous preparation involved, stating, “Preparation is tough as always in all facets—mentally, physically, spiritually—but we just must find a balance. Boxing is a tough sport; preparation is always the toughest part.”

Kauyaca has great respect for Ratumaikoro, who is transitioning from the lightweight to cruiserweight division. This will mark their first meeting in a competitive match, and Kauyaca hopes for “a clean, good, and tough match” on fight night.

The Kauyaca vs. Ratumaikoro showdown is set to be the main event of next month’s promotion, which is the first of four boxing events scheduled by Bluewater Boxing Promotion for the year.

This event not only highlights the resilience and dedication of Kauyaca as he prepares to defend his title but also represents the growing excitement around local boxing in Fiji. Fans can look forward to a thrilling night of boxing that emphasizes skill, sportsmanship, and the spirit of competition.
