Fiji’s cruiserweight champion, Alivereti Kauyaca, is preparing for an important match against Paulo Ratumaikoro at the Vodafone Arena in Suva on February 22. This fight is crucial for Kauyaca as he aims to achieve significant victories that could open doors to major overseas bouts.
Kauyaca emphasized the importance of this win, stating, “I need this win because I’m in a build-up phase.” He believes that securing two or three additional victories would enable him to compete for other regional titles, similar to his previous championship bout against John Parker. He expressed the necessity for boxers in Fiji to be active early in the year, noting the importance of accumulating fight records as they progress in age.
Reflecting on challenges faced by local athletes, Kauyaca pointed out that while many boxers in Fiji lament the lack of resources, some Fijian competitors had previously managed to achieve rankings in the world’s top 15 despite similar limitations. He urged fellow boxers to be consistent and diligent in their training efforts.
Kauyaca advocates for hard work, stating, “You just need hard work and with divine intervention, everything will fall in place if you utilize the available resources and put in those hard yards.” He acknowledged that overseas fighters benefit from better resources and stricter diets, which contribute to their consistency in the sport.
Moreover, Kauyaca highlighted the importance of discipline, criticizing the notion that post-fight celebrations should include drinking. He insists that maintaining discipline and focusing on regular training is vital for success in boxing.
As he prepares to begin training when he returns to Nadi following the Bluewater promotions launch, Kauyaca remains optimistic about the future of boxing in Fiji. “We can make our own world champion here in Fiji,” he concluded.
This perspective underscores a hopeful vision for Fijian boxing, as Kauyaca looks to inspire local talent to rise and succeed in the global arena. With his dedication and focus on discipline and hard work, there is potential for Fiji to cultivate world-class boxing champions amidst the challenges they face.
